I really, truly get riled up when people try to say that the NCAA is within their bounds pulling moves like this, or say things like "The NCAA shouldn't be paying for their books anyway! They get free tuition, that should be enough!" It blows my mind that some people can't see that this is a small step away from slave labor. This company (that describes itself as a not-for-profit organization so that they won't get taxed) makes billions upon billions of dollars off the backs of unpaid "amateur," basically-professional athletes, and then gets pissed when they try to profit off of their talents. Honestly, how does the NCAA expect these athletes to pay for anything? Their lives are essentially consumed by the sport they play between practices, games, and traveling. There's no time to work in a part-time job because they're already working a full-time job plus overtime without getting paid for it.
Jesus Christ. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! I truly don't understand how the NCAA can sit there with a straight face and say that they care about the well-being of their student-athletes. They work the athletes like dogs. They throw them a bone by allotting some money for books, and then suspend them for using said money in the bookstore. That is straight-up crazy town.
I'm not saying give each player a salary. There are thousands of athletes in the NCAA, and there simply wouldn't be enough money to go around. What I'm saying is let these kids profit off of their own abilities. Take Mark Zuckerberg. He used one of his abilities (smarts) to create Facebook while he was still in college, and he became a billionaire because of it. Someone like Deshaun Watson should be able to score a sponsorship from Nike or Adidas to help pay the bills, rather than being given free tuition for classes that he can't attend in many cases because of football. It makes everyone happy: the NCAA's athletes are widely marketed, the players make a little money, and the companies pick up some high-profile names to spread their brands.
TL;DR: The NCAA sucks, everything about it should change, and Charleston Southern is fuuuuuuuuuuucked vs. FSU.
