Researchers from New York-based Cornell University used a mObi robot manufactured by Bossa Nova in a simple test.
In the experiment, a robot guard was stationed over a table of food, though its design was not as menacing as the humanoid pictured, which could explain its lack of authority in preventing people from stealing food (stock image used)
While the robot is not designed to look particularly menacing or authoritative, it has cameras that enable it to 'see' what people around it are doing.
The behaviour of hundreds of students was captured by a hidden GoPro action camera, reports New Scientist.
The results showed that a disappointing seven per cent snaffled reserved food from the table, despite the robot guard's presence.
This was only very slightly lower then the eight per cent who took supplies when the table of food was not guarded at all.
However, when a human guard was stationed at the table, just two per cent of students were brazen enough to swipe a snack.
Some news from the world of science and robotics today, people don't have any respect for robots. I don't think I needed a study to tell me that. If there's a self-checkout register that doesn't have an employee hovering nearby, I don't pay for a good chunk of the items in my basket. I'd never try to pull that type of shit with a human cashier. They're already miserable enough and I don't need to try to ruin their day further. Robots, on the other hand, have no soul so I can't hurt their feelings. Fuck off, robots.
Meanwhile, this is a HUGE win for humans here. I have a slight (read: rapidly increasing in size) fear of robots taking over the world and enslaving humans. It's so obvious that it's gonna happen. Humans are such lazy sacks of shit that they're making a being that is stronger and more intelligent than we are, and we're expecting to come out on the other side smelling like roses. How stupid are we?! Me and Elon Musk are standing over here screaming "STOP MAKING ROBOTS SMARTER!!" and everyone else is like "haha no thanks, we're gonna create a monster that we won't be able to stop." I can't believe I'm part of such a dumb species.
